Why Should You Donate to the Leatherback Sea Turtle?
The Leatherback Sea Turtle is a majestic animal. It is the largest and most geographically wide ranging of all sea turtles. It has survived for over 110 million years only to be made almost extinct by human behaviors over the last few hundred years. This sea turtle is a very important part of the saltwater aquatic biome, and if it became extinct, its whole biome would be affected. As shown in the food web, the loss of the Leatherback Sea Turtle would increase the jellyfish population and decrease the quantity of fish in the ocean.
Conservation Efforts
The Leatherback Sea Turtle has been on the endangered list in the United Stares since 1970. It is now critically endangered, meaning there is a high risk of extinction in the world. In many places around the world it is illegal to kill the turtles and poach the eggs. However, it still happens. Some actions are already taking place like protecting the beaches on which the turtles lay their eggs. Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) have been built into some commercial fishing nets which allow captured turtles to escape from the nets. However, some fishermen complain it cuts down their catch size. There are many conservancy groups around the world dedicated to protecting Leatherback Sea Turtles habitats, including the World Wildlife Federation.
